Description

Double the fun with William, The Met's unofficial mascot. The playful design of our salt and pepper shakers reimagines the Museum's ancient Egyptian hippopotamus figurine (ca. 1961–1878 B.C.) as a pair of cute ceramic vessels for the table. Meals will be more fun with two little blue hippos at the ready.

The original statuette in The Met demonstrates the Egyptian artist's appreciation for the natural world. Beneath its blue-green glaze, the body was painted with the outlines of river plants, symbolizing the marshes in which the animal lived. Since its arrival at The Met in 1917, William has been a visitor favorite.
