Description

This elegant silk scarf adapts the motif on a Turkish dish (ca. 1560) made in the celebrated Iznik kilns. Emblazoned with exquisitely embellished white flowers on a rich blue base, this exceptional ceramic work in The Met collection exemplifies the Ottoman practice of painting white on blue instead of the more familiar blue-on-white style of pottery. Flowers radiating from a single source was a traditional Chinese design, which the artisan who crafted this dish has gorgeously reinterpreted.

Kabul- and New York City–based label Zarif Design is on a mission to transform the way Afghanistan is perceived. With collections inspired by the nation's sublime landscapes, exquisite architecture, and rich heritage, Zarif is about celebration through design and empowerment through craft. Each unique garment is created by local weavers, tailors, and embroiderers whose traditions and talents are endangered by mass production, and reinterprets distinctively Afghan fashions for a contemporary clientele.

This item was created for the Heirloom Project, led by designer Madeline Weinrib. The initiative celebrates the 10th anniversary of The Met's reimagined Islamic Wing by seeking engagement with global artisans who pursue historic techniques and design principles. The Heirloom Project commemorates The Met's Islamic art collection, supports the Museum, and endeavors to preserve traditional craftsmanship.
