A talented writer, designer, and administrator, William Morris (British, 1834–1896) was one of the most influential figures of the British Victorian era. In 1861, Morris co- founded a London interior design firm (reorganized in 1875 as Morris & Co.), producing murals, stained glass, furniture, textiles, jewelry, and wall coverings inspired by botanical motifs. The swirling floral motif on our tie is based on a Morris & Co. design drawing in the Metropolitan Museum’s collection; the original gouache on paper dates to about 1896.
