This eye-catching motif comes from Josef Albers's (American, b. Germany, 1888–1976) Tents (1933), a woodcut print in The Met collection. Albers was one of the most influential teachers at the Bauhaus from the school's 1919 inception in Weimar, Germany, through its final days in 1933 Berlin. Best known for his iconic nested squares, Albers was able to achieve a seemingly endless range of visual effects through color and geometry.
