Art History

The first watches—then more like portable clocks—began to appear in the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century, after the invention of the spring-driven (rather than weight-driven) time-keeping device. In the second half of the 18th century in Europe, fashions in pocket watches changed dramatically toward a slimmer, less ornamented and more elegant style.
