Description

During the 1890s Augustus Saint-Gaudens (American, born Ireland, 1848–1907) created 3 reduced variant editions of the 13-foot Diana sculpture. The Metropolitan Museum's statuette is one of the rare second types depicting the elegant figure posed on tiptoe on a sphere set on a two-tier base. Its matte patina, composed of gold, copper, and zinc, was applied by the electroplating process. The Museum's Diana sculpture is a reproduction of the original work on view in the Museum's American Wing.

Disappointed but not unhappy

I returned the Sculpture because the FiNISH was unattractive and ruined the desired effect. The Met Store was very willing and able to accept a return with refund.

Beautiful small statue

It is a very beautiful small statue and I love having it. The delicate tension in the posture of the original statue is in the replica. As other reviews have mentioned, the surface is not shiny as the photos suggest, but a muted gold. Apparently the material does not allow very fine detail, so the face and hands are crudely made in comparison to the very beautiful original. Do not anticipate studying St Gaudens's skill in those details. But it is a wonderful object and I am happy to have it.

Finish is dull, unlike photo. Details are crude. Costs ten times what it should.

Diana traveled to Canada with no problem thanks to careful packaging. The sculpture is stunning even at small scale. Finish is just right, shiny would be cheap. We are happy to have it at home.

Looking for something decorative

I wanted a small, decorative sculpture for my living room. Having a sculpture based upon a Saint-Guadens was the right piece I was looking for.

This well-coiffed Diana is lithe and not overdeveloped, yet able to draw the great bow effortlessly, and on tiptoe, as a Goddess would. She represents the power of woman's spirit. The finish shines with a special lustre, not too bright. I love it!

--Very nicely done, a subtle patina of painted gold. It is light in weight being bonded bronze and captures the grace and beauty of the full sized rendering at the MET.
