Description

During the 1890s Augustus Saint-Gaudens (American, born Ireland, 1848–1907) created 3 reduced variant editions of the 13-foot Dianasculpture. The Metropolitan Museum's statuette is one of the rare second types depicting the elegant figure posed on tiptoe on a sphere set on a two-tier base. Its matte patina, composed of gold, copper, and zinc, was applied by the electroplating process. The Museum's Dianasculpture is a reproduction of the original work on view in the Museum's American Wing.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from dull finish I bought this a year ago to accent an antique commode. The finish is indeed disappointing, even cheap looking--nothing like the lovely goddess guarding the American wing! I would gladly have paid a higher price for a quality finish, and I imagine others would as well. I've even thought about having it recovered in gold leaf, but don't know if it would work. The scale is also disappointing, even though I was careful to read the dimensions before ordering. Should the museum decide to reissue it in a larger size, (and with a better finish), I would definitely be interested ! It is also not the most stable piece and could have profited from having a heavier base.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Slightly disappointed I bought this a month ago and was a little disappointed when I received it. First of all, out of the box, the tip of the arrow was bent upward at about a 45 degree angle -- I was able to bend it straight. Secondly, the sculpture was described as "bonded bronze" so I expected it to be heavier, more substantial. Overall, not what I thought I was buying.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Photo Misrepresents Finish I bought this for my wife and I must admit I am disappointed. From the photo the statue appears to have a bright golden finish. The actual statue we received looks like it was spray painted with a rough bronze paint spray. Its surface is not smooth, but somewhat mottled. My wife still wants the statue, but again it wasn't what we bargained for.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Graceful and Elegant! I just received this beautiful piece and it is a true treasure! The statue is NOT a bright, shiny gold but instead a beautiful muted, "brushed" gold color. It is lightweight and looks good on a pedestal. The graceful style is superb and the pose is remarkable. This is definitely a piece that every collector of art should love!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lovely I bought this after reading the reviews and was therefore aware of just how the piece would look. I'm very happy with it. I too found the arrow tip to be bent despite the very thick foam padding in which it was packed. I was a little apprehensive when straightening it since it seems a bit delicate at that point but the material is sufficiently malleable to allow for it --- although I wouldn't want to have to do it too often.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful small statue It is a very beautiful small statue and I love having it. The delicate tension in the posture of the original statue is in the replica. As other reviews have mentioned, the surface is not shiny as the photos suggest, but a muted gold. Apparently the material does not allow very fine detail, so the face and hands are crudely made in comparison to the very beautiful original. Do not anticipate studying St Gaudens's skill in those details. But it is a wonderful object and I am happy to have it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Beautiful Lady On many visits to the Met I have admired the Diana., now I own my little gold version that sits in my living room and reminds me of wonderful travels and the beauty of a wonderful piece of art. Owning the Diana makes me feel very special! Is that odd? Or is that the way a wonderful piece of art should make you feel? I think it is!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beauty! Diana traveled to Canada with no problem thanks to careful packaging. The sculpture is stunning even at small scale. Finish is just right, shiny would be cheap. We are happy to have it at home.
