Description

Ceramic Hippopotamus Sculpture

Since its arrival at the Museum in 1917 the Egyptian faience sculpture has been a favorite with visitors, and for many years has been known as "William" the Metropolitan's unofficial mascot. Like the original, our figurine is decorated with drawings of lotus blossoms and marsh plants which remind us of his favorite habitat, the shallow banks of the Nile River.

Helpfulness
Poor attention to detail for the price

It is a cute statue but not accurate enough to the original considering the price and the fact this comes from an art museum that owns the original. I do not expect them to simulate aging, but it really lacks attention to detail in the neck, feet, and head- important features that make the original feel lifelike and less like a piggy bank (which the met does sell, and is far more reasonably priced). The black decorative elements on the side of the face are not even close. I would rather spend $100 on a better statue than $70 on a mediocre one. Disappointing, will likely attempt to return it.

It was the perfect gift

This was a Christmas gift from my husband, after he asked what I wanted for Christmas, and I jokingly said a hippopotamus (I also asked for “my two front teeth”, of which I received in the form of a Billie Bob pacifier. He’s such a comedian. Ha!). This replica is of excellent quality, arrived in perfect condition, and sits proudly on our fireplace mantle.

I lost my first hippo from the museum that I purchased 30 years ago and thought that I would not be able to replace. So happy to to have my hippo back! Looks just like my original!

I bought him so long ago, I no longer remember when, but I believe he was the first thing I ever got from the Met (15 or 20 yrs?), and I have loved him ever since, also in miniature, plush, & magnets. I am thinking about the bookends now.

I first met William in the book, 'William and his Friends: A Group of Notable Creatures in the Metropolitan Museum of Art,' published by the Met in 1936. My mother gave me the book in 1937, when I was three, and after longing for him ever since, I finally ordered William a few days ago. He arrived yesterday and he's perfect in every detail, exactly as pictured: 'correct' beautiful blue color, crisp, delicate art work, and flawless glaze. . He's now very much at home on the mantel in my living room, with several other 'fantastical,' legendary and pleasantly strange beasts.
