Our reproduction, which is based on an Egyptian sculpture of the Ptolemaic period (332–30 B.C.), is produced from a master mold of the original in the Museum's collection. Cats were first domesticated by the Egyptians in the Middle Kingdom for their mouse-hunting abilities. By New Kingdom times they had also become household companions. In tomb scenes they frequently appear seated beneath the chairs of their owners or on sporting boats in the Nile marshes, where they flush out birds for their masters.

I purchased one of these almost 30 yrs ago … absolutely love it!!! It has always been an important fixture in my home. Glad to see they are still be made.
DEAR SIRS_x000D_
I bought a pair of this CAT SCULPTURES about 20 years ago and they´re still a main piece of attention in my house. Unfortunatedly, I lost an earring and can´t find a place in the MET site to request another one. I would be more than thankful if you kindly guide me to get a new one. Thanks in advance.
I have had this sculpture for close to fifty years and decided I would take advantage of the sale and purchase a second. It is beautiful and inscrutable just like the feline model upon which it is based.
Bought this Beautiful, mesmerizing cat for my wife while on vacation in Virginia with some friends. Knowing my wife hates having presents bought for her, it called for me to take it home to her. It has ended up on the mantle of the guest house, because while she likes it, she did not chose it herself. So, it is mine, I am a Disabled Veteran dealing with debilitating PTSD and have a cat for a Therapy companion that loves this statue. While I have considered getting rid of it because of my wife's reaction toward it, but because DandyLion seems to draw strength and guidance to help me through my difficult times, I think for now it will have to stay.
I bought the Egyptian Cat Sculpture as a gift for a friend in California and had it shipped directly to her, so haven't actually seen it other than the pictures when I ordered it (I trusted to the quality of the products from The Met). My friend raved about it, said she absolutely loved it, and has placed it prominently on her fireplace mantle
This is the second cat statue I have purchased as the original one was destroyed by vandals in a robbery so I replaced it since I can't be without it. I love cats and have several. This cat is so well made and is detailed exquisitely. It is almost the size of a real cat and from what I have read, it is like a "mummy coffin" for a cat. It is a heavy piece and needs to be displayed in an area where it can be seen and admired. It is commanding in a room and you will receive many compliments on it! The patina is wonderful and it looks like it is made of real bronze. Also, the packaging this beautiful statue was sent in was very well done. No broken pieces, just perfect in every way. Bastet was a god in Egyptian mythology and cats were kept by all Egyptians as good luck. Pharaoh had several large cats, probably leopards or similar but all were revered and treasured, pampered in every way! Some from the royal households were even given jewelry to wear (thus the gold earrings). A very important piece of statuary from the Met.
Scrape on one side revealed "base" & on the opposite side, one earring is falling off (yes, I know how to bend wire). I'd return this item EXCEPT I've already cleaned up 1000 styrofoam peanuts and I'm not willing to do that again.
This cat has an honored place in my living room, even though I own no cats (but this one) and am really a dog person. What I do love is the simple, classic lines of Egyptian art and this cat is the highest quality reproduction of an Egyptian cat.
