Inspired by the aromatic tropical bloom known as frangipani, this necklace from Bilum and Bilas is crafted by artisans in Papua New Guinea using ancient weaving techniques passed down through generations of women. They're fabricated with a natural fiber, locally referred to as rapa, that's been sustainably hand-foraged and processed.
Bilum and Bilus—a reference to Papua New Guinean woven bags called bilum and jewelry known as bilas—celebrates the region's history, culture, and traditions while empowering contemporary craftswomen.
We're pleased to present this item in celebration of the new Michael C. Rockefeller Wing for the arts of Oceania. These new galleries feature over 650 works from the Museum's collection, drawn from over 140 distinct cultures. The galleries are organized according to island groups in a layout designed to foreground ancestral connections and Indigenous temporalities.
