Description

The perfect souvenir from a museum gift shop.

The awe-inspiring view on this canvas pouch comes from Caspar David Friedrich's (German, 1774–1840) Mountain Landscape in Bohemia (ca. 1830), in the collection of the Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg, which reveals the artist's approach to interpreting scenes from nature. The painting's composition is made up of harmonious horizontal layers: a grassy plain met with a golden cornfield, a sequence of mountains, and a sky animated by ethereal clouds. It's possible that Friedrich has illustrated a section of the Giant Mountains (on the border of modern-day Czechia and Poland), with the Schneekoppe as its highest peak; however, the artist was known to take creative liberties in his paintings by merging various landscapes to realize an imaginary location.

We're pleased to present this item in celebration of Caspar David Friedrich: The Soul of Nature, on view at The Met Fifth Avenue from February 8 through May 11, 2025. Friedrich reimagined European landscape painting by portraying nature as a setting for profound spiritual and emotional encounters. Working in the vanguard of the German Romantic movement, which championed a radical new understanding of the bond between nature and the inner self, he emphasized the complexity of our responses to the natural world. The first comprehensive exhibition dedicated to the artist held in the United States, organized in honor of the 250th anniversary of Friedrich's birth in 2024, Caspar David Friedrich: The Soul of Nature showcases oil paintings, finished drawings, and working sketches from every phase of the artist's career, along with select examples by his contemporaries. The vision of the landscape that unfolds in his art—meditative, mysterious, and full of wonder—is still vital today.
