Rated 5 out of 5 by from An excellent resouce for study. The number of works and the clear descriptions make this an excellent resource for an art history course I am completing. To add to this, the fact that it is in chronological order fits exactly with the study topics. I like the fact that this book is very large and therefore the details of the artwork are easy to see and study. I am also using this as a resource for my next visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art next year. During my last visit I was overwhelmed by the magnitude of the collection but this book allows me to direct my interests to certain topics and art works. I find it fascinating to look at so many magnificent works of art in my own home.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Metropolitan Museum's World of Painting This book is a must for everyone who loves going to the Metropolitan Museum. The Met contains the most encyclopedic collection of paintings in the world. This publication illustrates 500 of the museum's greatest paintings. Most of the major European and American masters are represented as well as works from ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome, Asia, Latin America, and Africa. This heavy volume's illustrations are beautifully photographed and the commentaries are brief but comprehensive. The works are presented in a cross cultural context by date of execution rather than museum department. The only slight drawback is that several of the Chinese and Japanese hand scrolls are so large that only details were illustrated. However, it is strongly recommended to anyone who wants a catalogue of the Met's painting treasures or a survey of world painting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Opulent! Large color photos show the sweep of the Met's collection. I especially like that the photos are shown in chronological order, without regard to geography. (My favorite pair of pages shows two Buddhist mandalas and a historiated capital depicting the Birth of the Virgin that also looks like a mandala.) The photos for each chronological period come first, followed by small photos of each work with information about it. My one quibble is that some obvious items were left out, notably the Chinese handscroll "The Pleasures of Fishes." But what's there is more than worth the price of admission.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A visit to the MET in the comfort of home The book is beautifully printed and the commentary adds tremendous value to the spectacular "eye candy" of simply looking at all of the glorious paintings. Having the text at the end of each section of paintings is a brilliant move that allows for large printed images without shortchanging the information. Can't wait for a snowstorm to curl up and be transported.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stunning! This is a massive and stunning volumes of many of the Met's great masterpiece paintings. The writing is clear and informative, and worthy of the generous amount of excellent color plates. My home library includes hundreds of carefully selected high quality art books. Without a doubt this oversize volume deserves a place among them. This book is not to be passed up. It is worth far beyond the price!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful Book & Carefully Packed for Shipping This was a gift to myself, and I love it. High quality. I have it as my current coffee table book, so I can browse it when I'm on the sofa. And unlike some other companies where the books are just placed in a box and sent, this one was nicely packaged and arrived in flawless condition. I will take a real book over a digital copy, anytime.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely beautiful! I bought this book last week for my mother-in-law for her birthday. The book is beyond words, really. The colors in the pictures are so vibrant it makes them almost look 3 dimensional. The book is also very heavy so you can tell the quality is really nice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An Astounding Collection of Met Masterpieces This wonderful book is comprised of the most beautiful works in the Metropolitan Museum. These masterpieces are printed and bound with loving care. The color reproductions are dead on and the binding and technical publishing aspects are about the best you'll ever see. The copy is exceptional and detailed. As a reference book, it can be used by scholars and students. As a book in an art library, it is essential.
