Description

By Adolfo Salvatore Cavallo

The unicorn tapestries are one of the most popular attractions at The Cloisters Museum and Gardens, the medieval branch of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Traditionally known as The Hunt of the Unicorn, this set of seven exquisite and enigmatic tapestries was likely completed between 1495 and 1505. The imaginatively conceived scenes—displaying individualized faces of the hunters and naturalistically depicting the flora and fauna of the landscape—are beautifully captured in silk, wool, and metal yarns. Written by one of the world's leading authorities on medieval textiles and illustrated with many lovely color reproductions, The Unicorn Tapestries traces the origins of the tapestries as well as possible interpretations of their symbolic meaning. This is an essential book for any lover of medieval art and textiles.

I love the color and the descriptions. Grew up viewing these and have always been enamored with them. Ended up with a BA in Medieval studies. Was hoping for some newer or more extensive information.

I've seen the Unicorn Tapestries several times, as well as posters while traveling, and after learning more about them on my last visit the the Cloisters I finally bit the bullet and ordered the book! Beautifully, done, full shots and details, plus other related tapestries. It provides an excellent chronology of creation, loss, and rediscovery in context with history and the other tapestries, as well as interpretations of meaning. I love it and am thoroughly enjoying it!

Bought the book as a gift to my niece with the hope she will educate herself about the design of the shirt and pin I also bought her.  We will see, but I think this beautiful book stands a very good chance.

This exhibition catalogue is a must! It has large illustrations and also includes diagram breakdowns of some of the illustrations. Very interesting commentary as well. My only disappointment is that there is no coordinating wall calendar for this exhibition!
