Our reproduction is based on an original Egyptian sculpture from the Late Dynastic period (712–332 B.C.), now in the Museum's collection. The bronze cat figure, found in Saqqara, is hollow, indicating that it was probably used as a container for mummified remains. In its subtle modeling and stylized features, the sculptor has captured the lithe aloofness and dignity characteristic of the feline. A collar is engraved around the neck, from which is suspended an wedjat-eye pectoral for protection and well-being.

My favorite animal-black cats (big and small). I thought it would be nice in my collection. Upon receiving the Egyptian Cat, I knew it was a wise purchase. The eloquent form is calming. So much so that I now use it as a meditation tool. It is the perfect size to take along when traveling. I wish I had bought it earlier.
I own several Egyptian cat sculptures but this one along with the large one (also at the Met for sale) are my favorites. This is a solid piece that has some weight to it and is very well finished. It is a great collector's item if you collect cats and looks great on a coffee table sitting on a piece of cut crystal as a base. The price is amazing too for such an art object of high quality. Bast or Bastet was a goddess of Egyptian mythology and was an important part of Egyptian religion. Cats were sacred to Egyptians and almost every household had them as they brought good luck and good fortune to their owners. This is a MUST for anyone loving Egyptian statuary and at a great price too!
