Description

Imposing sculptures of divine guardians (lamassu) protected and supported the important palace doorways at Nimrud, including a human-headed winged bull and a human-headed winged lion in the Museum's collection. The horned caps the figures wear attest to their divinity, while their belts signify power. The sculptor gave these figures five legs so they appear to be standing firmly when viewed from the front but striding forward when seen from the side. Our striking bookends are based on these resplendent Assyrian guardian sculptures.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Assyrian bookends! As a collector of ancient art, especially Egyptian and Assyrian/Babylonian, I purchased this pair to hold my Egyptian books in my den. They look so dynamic on the book stand and everyone that sees them thinks they are the real thing. I have seen the "real thing" at the Met in NYC and they are gigantic! This wonderful pair are wonderfully crafted and they are weighty enough to hold your great book collection. The hand finishing of the pieces is very well done and they have the perfect patina. Not only are these beautiful but the price is right. I love the sculpture from the Met and I can't say enough good about it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Elegant pair of guardians for a row of art books I have lots of bookends--antique, semi-precious stone--you name it.  I love this pair because they are tall, heavy, and easily and elegantly hold a row of art books.  The patina is perfectly stone-like and the detailing of the feathers, beards, etc. is very fine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful and functional. I bought these years ago and am still very pleased with them. If you study them very closely they are not identical mirror images but each is slightly different. I love that about them. Detailed and high quality construction. They are substantial and will not fall over as some bookends tend to do.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Assyrian Palace Guard bookends I bought these for my husband 's study - he was once an archaeologist and I thought he might enjoy them - I was so pleased when they arrived as they were even more impressive in person.  He is difficult to buy for at the best of times, but he really enjoyed this gift. He is looking forward to receiving gifts from the Met in the future.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for what I wanted I had been searching for a set of bookends for couple of months when I saw these in the catalog. They are a good height and weight and fit the decor of my house perfectly. They do not take up a lot of room on the shelf which leaves more room for books -always a good thing.
