Description

The striking motif defining this pendant necklace comes from an earring design by Romain de Tirtoff (French, b. Russia, 1892–1990), better known as Erté. His surviving sketch depicts a crescent shape embellished with a Greek key pattern and cabochon centerpiece. Erté enjoyed a multifaceted career as a designer of fabulous costumes and sets. He was likewise renowned for his Harper's Bazaar magazine covers, published between 1915 and 1936. The Met houses an important collection of Erté's original gouaches.
