Description

A one-time assistant in the studio of Auguste Rodin, François Pompon (French, 1855–1933) did not achieve recognition as a sculptor until he was 67 years old. In 1922, his plaster sculpture of a polar bear—nearly ten feet in length—won critical and popular praise at the Paris Salon d’Automne. Smoothly modeled and shorn of extraneous detail, the work was later reproduced in a variety of sizes and media, including plaster, porcelain, and marble. The version in the Metropolitan Museum was executed in white marble soon after the original plaster. Our reproduction is cast from a direct mold of the original Pompon polar bear sculpture.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I've been waiting for this sculpture since 1989! Flashback to Christmas 1989. My husband & I had two small children. Alex was five & Jennifer was two-years-old. Our finances were tight. I'm looking at friend's Christmas catalog and came across a marble sculpture of a polar bear that I REALLY wanted. My husband said that he would buy it for me, but it would probably be my only Christmas gift. We just didn't have a lot of money for frivolous purchases. The logical side of me said that I needed practical things, so I didn't ask for the sculpture. Many decades passed and I occasionally mentioned that polar bear sculpture. About a month ago Alex decided to find the sculpture for me. I thought the original catalog was either from the Smithsonian Institute or National Geographic. Alex found a man on-line who had all of the National Geographic magazines & catalogs and hired him to do a search to find the polar bear. No luck. Next Alex contacted the Smithsonian Institute, but no luck there either. Last week I asked my friend , who owned the original 1989 Christmas catalog. She thought that it might have been from the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art. Alex discovered that those catalogs are stored at Bowling Green State University. He contacted Dr. Down at BGSU and she agreed to try (and ultimately found) the polar bear sculpture. He had found the polar bear that I have wanted since 1989! Dr. Down informed Alex of her success and a few quick keyboard strokes later, Alex had found and purchased the sculpture for me. Best Mother's Day gift EVER! Without a doubt this has been the nicest and most thoughtful thing that anyone has ever done for me. I will always treasure this sculpture.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lovely Sculpture I had seen this Pompom sculpture in France at the Musee d'Orsay ...the "white bear" is magnificent to stand beside. However, bringing a replica home from France would have been too inconvenient. When we returned to Canada I went online to the Met store and found the "bear". The Met shipped the bear to my home in British Columbia...it was well packed...the bear is an outstanding piece beautifully done. And...I was able to purchase it on our side of the "pond".

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love it!! This was given to me as a Christmas present to myself (using money given to me). I was the original(?) at the Musee D'Orsay in 1994 and just sat there enjoying it. So glad I finally purchased this replica after years of pondering it. Very high quality, heavy-weight, and true to the original I remember seeing in Paris. I got the smaller of the two. I would expect the larger version to be of equal quality. Happy to recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Francois Pompon Polar Bear Until receiving an edition of the smaller of the two polar bear sculptures on offer, I was only hoping it would prove to be a really nice piece. It's spectacular. Heavy and solid. Exquisitely cut and detailed. In terms of size, I'd say it (roughly) takes up the space of a pair of softballs. I'll treasure it. Thanks, guys.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally Have been wanting this replica for years and finally buckled down to purchase. Of the other sites that offer the Ours Blanc by Pompon, the Met store was the cheapest. The piece arrived quickly and well packed.
