Description

Unique art jewelry inspired by The Met collection.

These fierce lion earrings with sparkling eyes and a movable hoop reinterpret a lion mask door pull made in Nuremberg, Germany, around 1425–50 and now in The Met's medieval art collection. Such door pulls were a common feature on churches throughout the Middle Ages; they functioned as decorative door hardware as well as sanctuary rings, symbols of the church's protection. The Met's example was likely made in southern Germany, where prolific workshops produced a range of cast objects.
