Description

These stylish monochrome side plates are adorned with details from two etchings—one by Michelangelo Pergolesi (Italian, active from 1760–died 1801), the other styled after Pergolesi—in The Met collection. Acanthus Leaves, Birds and Insects (1792), designed by the Italian decorative artist, comes from a group of prints published serially in London between 1777 and 1792. Upon Pergolesi's death in 1801, the portfolio was inherited by the bookseller Dulouchamp, who added four plates of designs that same year, including Varieties of Leaf Ornament (1801), likewise adapted for this set.
