The Met acquired this monumental "drip" painting in 1957, the year after the artist's unexpected death—a testament to how quickly his revolutionary style was accepted into the canon of modern art. But this large-scale work was derived from the muralism of the 1930s. "I intend to paint large movable pictures which will function between the easel and the mural," Pollock proclaimed. "The tendency of modern feeling is towards the wall picture or mural."
