Severin Roesen's (American, b. Prussia, 1816–1872?) Still Life: Flowers and Fruit (1850–55), featured in The Met's American Wing and on this cotton canvas zip pouch, represents the artist at his best. This exceptionally large still life depicts over a dozen varieties of flowers and fruits, which became more accessible thanks to 19th-century improvements in cultivation and shipping. As such, the inclusion of an exotic pineapple and pomegranate alludes to America's bounty. Roesen was a German immigrant who fled the revolutions of 1848 for a more promising life in the United States. He exhibited in New York in the 1850s, and in 1863, he settled in Pennsylvania, where he painted for titans of industry who reaped the rewards of the nation's seemingly limitless resources.
