This singular piece has been adapted from the shebiu necklace of Hatnefer (New Kingdom, Dynasty 18, 1492–1473 B.C.) in The Met collection. The necklace features lentil– shaped beads of Egyptian faience, a ceramic material made of quartz, which are still strung on the original linen cord.
In 1936, the Museum's Egyptian Expedition discovered a tomb in Thebes, Upper Egypt, which had been prepared for Hatnefer, the mother of Senenmut, an important official. She had died in her 70s, early in the joint reign of the female pharaoh Hatshepsut and Thutmose III.
